Precision impressions with addition silicone

Addition silicone (A-silicone or vinyl polysiloxane, VPS) is the go-to material for precision impressions in fixed prosthodontics and implant work. A putty and light-body combination captures both the overall arch and fine margin detail, and hydrophilic formulations handle the moist oral environment better.

Putty impression material buying guide

Addition vs condensation silicone

Addition silicones (A-silicones) set without a by-product and offer better dimensional stability, so casts can be poured with less distortion. Condensation silicones (C-silicones) are lower in cost but less stable over time. For crowns, bridges and implants, addition silicone is the usual choice.

One-step and two-step putty-wash techniques

  • One-step: putty and light body are placed together and set at the same time.
  • Two-step: a putty preliminary impression is taken first, then relined with light body for margin detail.

STAR Soft Putty’s 1:30 minute working time gives time to seat the tray in either technique.

Handling tips

  • Mix base and catalyst in equal portions until the colour is uniform.
  • Latex gloves can inhibit the setting of addition silicone; use vinyl or nitrile gloves when kneading putty.
  • Keep the field as dry as practical, even with a hydrophilic material.
  • Allow the full setting time before removing the tray.
